Campaigns
Campaigns
Our borough specific campaigns in Westminster and Newham have achieved a great deal despite only being in operation for a relatively short period of time. A summary of the main achievements can be found below:
Newham
Kit for Kids - Assistance with the cost of school clothing
- A petition signed by over 900 people was delivered to the Newham Mayor in support of school clothing grants.
- To give immediate help to low income families with the cost of school clothing, two clothing recycling drive pilots will be held in July 2010, instigated by 4in10 and coordinated by a coalition of organisations in Newham. A toolkit to assist schools and other organisations to replicate such an initiative can be downloaded here.
A Fair Deal for Newham Children - Fairer school funding
- A petition signed by close to 1000 people was delivered to Dawn Primarolo and Vernon Coaker, the latter of whom responded to this with a letter acknowledging the importance of this issue in the school funding review.
- 22 organisations signed up in support of 4in10's formal submission to the DCSF's Consultation on the Future of School Funding. Click here to download a copy of the submission.
The government is seriously considering an option which takes regional variations in teacher's salaries into account when distributing school funding. If implemented later this year, this would give Newham's schools the fairer funding they deserve.
Better Homes for Newham Families
- Our petition was signed by close to 900 people.
- The frequent failure of private landlords and management agents, to honour their obligations to maintain and repair temporary accommodation in Newham, was bought to the attention of Newham's public. Through continued news coverage, 4in10 succeeded in raising awareness of this issue with landlords and tenants.
Westminster
- 4in10's response to the council's Housing Renewal Consultation was supported by 24 local organisations. Click here to download a copy of this document. The Westminster Community Network (WCN) will continue to campaign on the housing and overcrowding issues highlighted in this submission.
- A parents group was trained in campaigning and public speaking, motivating and empowering them to engage with decision makers in the local borough on two separate occasions. This group will be continuing to campaign with Save the Children.
