Here at 4in10, we would like to congratulate the London Borough of Tower Hamlets after it was awarded Beacon status for outstanding work in preventing and tackling child poverty.
Child poverty in areas such as Tower Hamlets, where there is significant deprivation, can lead to social exclusion and directly impact on children’s education, employment chances and mental and physical health.
With a determined effort, however, research shows that it is possible to lift children out of poverty, improve their life chances and reduce the overall cost to society of picking up the pieces caused by the problem.
At the same time as welcoming help from local councils and boroughs, we and the national campaign to End Child Poverty are calling on the Government to invest at least £3 billion in children in the forthcoming budget and keep its promise to halve child poverty by 2010.
