End Child Poverty adds its voice to calls to end child poverty in Northern Ireland, February 12, 2009
Responding to the Northern Ireland Office of the First and Deputy First Minister’s announcement that almost 100,000 children in Northern Ireland are still living in deprivation, Hilary Fisher, Director of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said: “The number of children living in poverty is shamefully high and likely to get worse with rising unemployment and high food and fuel prices that mean families are increasingly struggling to cover the cost of basic household bills.
“We are asking the Government to invest £3 billion to keep its promise to halve child poverty by 2010 and improve the lives of 3.9 million UK children in poverty.
“In Northern Ireland, the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley, has joined our Valentine’s Day campaign to remind the Chancellor, Alistair Darling of the Government’s pledge, by sending him a signed Valentine’s card.”
The End Child Poverty Campaign has arranged for more than 100 Valentine’s cards signed by senior figures from children’s and other charities, social justice groups, faith groups and trade unions to be delivered to Mr Darling.
