The Campaign to End Child Poverty has warned that unemployment rising to 1.97 million could have a disastrous affect on children living in poverty.
The Director of the Campaign, Hilary Fisher, said: “The announcement that unemployment has today hit 6.3% is particularly worrying. It’s the highest since 1998 when the Government pledged to end child poverty by 2020. To reach the 2010 half-way target and improve the lives of millions of children, the Government urgently needs to invest £3 billion in tax credits and benefits. Research shows that children whose parents have moved more than once from work to benefits are more likely to be living in severe poverty.”
