Keep The Promise Event Saturday October 4th 2008

Ten thousand children, families and supporters from across the UK came together, for the Keep the Promise rally on October 4th, to show their desire for an end to child poverty.

The biggest ever event to end child poverty helped to raise awareness on child poverty and put pressure on the Government, we need to keep this pressure up. The Pre Budget Report in autumn 2009 is the last realistic chance for the Government to meet the 2010 target and keep alive its promise to end child poverty. 2009 is a vital year for children in poverty.

One in three children live in poverty in the UK today, and without significant investment this year, any progress on child poverty is at risk.

Growing up in poverty hurts.

We can see the damage that poverty does to children and to our society and are demanding a better future for all our children.

The Government have made the boldest political promise of a generation – to end child poverty.

This was to halve child poverty by 2010 and end it by 2020. Although progress has been made and 600,000 children have been lifted out of poverty since 1997, this progress has now stalled and the Government is not on track to meet the target. The 2009 Budget saw very little investment to eradicate child poverty, less than 40p a week.

Now, you can hold them to it.
